It's probably both. While Bobby continues to capture mainstream media
attention with his oil spill antics, draconian cuts to the health care and
public education budgets in Louisiana
are fast becoming a reality. The Board of Regents voted on June 25 to cancel
statewide access to electronic books and journals. In a public university
system in which new paper books and journals were last ordered in the Carter
administration, this cancellation presents a particular set of problems.
It certainly sets UNO directly on the path to being a trade school, but that's
what the Governor wants after all. Me, I'm wondering how to write a
dissertation with no resources. Maybe I won't. I mean fuck it, what
would I do with a PhD in Louisiana
anyway? Cuts equaling those made to higher education are being made to
the state's health care system. Mental and physical health facilities are
going to begin shedding staff due to massive cuts at a time when we surely
can't spare the care. LSU's Health
Sciences Center
could lose as much as $800,000 as a result of being hit by cuts from both the
higher education and health care slash and burn.
I'm aware that the Board of Regents are responsible for higher education's
newest and most obnoxious cut, and I'm aware that the state's legislators are
the ones throwing up their hands and saying "well, we've just got to find
a way to cut government spending." "Why are you so angry at
Bobby?, " you might be asking. Jindal himself is too busy ignoring
scientific evidence that sand berms and rock walls will increase coastal
erosion while simultaneously accusing the Obama administration (correctly) of
ignoring expert evidence that a moratorium on drilling isn't necessary to
improve safety conditions. I get it. But what the fuck is wrong
with the Board of Regents, the state legislature, and the rest of us? Why
the fuck can't we see that the long term impacts of reduced health care and
education are going to paralyze the state entirely? When the fuck did we
agree to this neoliberal, no-tax, bullshit? Why can't we see that the
fucking hole in the budget matches the fucking tax cuts that fucking Bobby
Jindal put in place when he got elected? And that little extra gap, the
one where the emergency funds used to be? That's the money that those
north Louisiana
crackers stole to pay for new cattle gates and festivals likely celebrating the
continued ignorance and poor health of the Republican-voting cracker
population. Fuck Bobby Jindal. Fuck the Board of Regents.
Fuck the state legislature. Fuck north Louisiana crackers. And fuck us. We
can't go to these assholes and beg for them to make some sense and fix the
budget deficit through taxation. We let them trick some sort of voting
majority into believing that you can run a state on no taxes. But fuck
Bobby Jindal and his political aspirations most of all. Fuck him, fuck
him, fuck him.
